EN PLEIN AIR PAINTING
En plein air is the French word for outdoors, or the act of painting outdoors. Painting in natural light (rather than in a studio set-up) became popular during the mid-19th century age of the French Impressionists.
Weather permitting, students will paint outdoors near Building W at Brookhaven College. During inclement weather, students will paint indoors using photos. Painting demonstrations will be given by the instructor at the beginning of each class. Design elements include; color, tonal value, textures, shapes, balance, harmony, the importance of contrasts, and repetition within a design.
Supplies: Please bring a sketch book, pencils and a phone or camera to the first class meeting. Additional supplies will be discussed at this time.
Pastel is undergoing a resurgence in popularity as more and more artists realize its possibilities as a medium capable of extraordinary detail and abundant expressiveness.
Whether you are a beginner or a seasoned pastelist, this course offers the opportunity to create a beautiful landscape scene while also learning about basic design, perspective and some color theory elements.
Students work with soft pastels (not oil pastels), which contain a higher portion of pigment and less binder, resulting in a vibrancy of color and a medium which may be readily smudged and/or blended. The instructor will work step-by-step with students.
Supplies: Beginners may purchase a set of soft pastels at a craft or art supply store (a set of 36 is sufficient). Masonite or foam core, cut to 14”x18” (any sturdy board to back pastel paper on an easel). Mi-Teintes Canson Pastel Paper pad (no larger than 9”x12” or 12”x16”.) A small pack of hand wipes, a roll of paper towels and masking tape or metal clips.
